Flowers and flower motifs can be found in many works of Vrubel. In flowers he saw the beauty, manifested and seen throughout the world. He was interested in the microcosm of a special nature: Vrubel was very sensual artist with a special pantheistic attitude towards nature.

There was not a single flower, which was not worth his attention: whether it was a regular periwinkle, petunia in a glass, irises or exotic azalea, being brought to Kiev from France and Netherlands. It was the time when Vrubel lived in Kiev, when the artist first opened an ornamental gift. This new exhibition can be seen as the birth and development of artist’s skills for painting flower patterns: motifs for embroidery, sketch for porcelain painting made for Emilia Prahova and various Indian ornaments.

The exhibition displays the very first sketch for the icon of the Virgin with the Child for Kyrylivska Church. This sketch of the Virgin with floral ornament was not approved. After, Vrubel created another sketch and the initial work with floral patterns remained unfinished.
